Tante Tinnie's orchid collection

Tante Tinnie has one of the most exotic orchid collections that I have ever seen. There she is spraying them plant food. Tante Tinnie and Oom Robbie have a huge property with lots of orange trees among others an a little fish pond in the back yard.

Andre caught a Koebi in the Saramacca Rivier. Actually, he was the only one that caught anything. That's Danny displaying the catch.

BUDGETING IN A MODERN ENVIRONMENT

BUDGETING IN A MODERN ENVIRONMENT

Implementing budgets in a World Class Manufacturing (WCM) Environm may be affected by the impact of: TQM
                      JIT
                      Activity Based Focus

The principles of these systems can result in changes in the way in which budgets are prepared as compared to a traditional incremental budgeting system.

TQM embraces the need for continuous improvement. It envisages change about the way things are done. The features which it will contain are:
  • It aims towards an environment of zero defects at minimum cost. This is different to the incremental nature of traditional budgets.

  • It requires that all staff are aware of the changes. This requires greater employee involvement in the budget setting process

  • It recognizes the need to increase value added activities & seeks to incorporate methods changes which will assist in this process. The budget process must incorporate & quantify such changes.

JIT focuses on customers demand for the product or service. It assumes a pull through approach. It aims at improved planning from the inflow of raw materials from the supplier to the delivery of the finished product to the customer. This requires moves to eliminate raw materials stocks, WIP & finished goods. It will also require closer liaison with customers & suppliers with regard to the timing of requirement.
All such factors will affect the structure of the budget model & preparation.

ABB

An activity based focus attempts to rectify some of the inherent weaknesses in a traditional incremental budgeting system. The major focus in ABB is on strategies for change which aims at efficiency & continuous improvement.
The features which will distinguish ABB from incremental budgeting are:
  1. It forges closer links between planning & budgeting through identifying options for change. It will probably be operated in conjunction with a TQM programme.

  1. It focuses on activity rather than expenses. This will require identification of activities & their classification into primary & support activities. Also value added & non value added activities.

  1. It follows a TQM philosophy of involving all employees in the planning & budgeting process. Focus can be in identifying cost drivers for each activity. The budget will be prepared after considering how the incidence of a cost driver can be reduced & in which ways it may be more efficiently implemented.

It is therefore evident that the TQM philosophy, JIT, Activity based focus are likely to be inter related in the preparation of budgets in a WCM environ.

EXPECTATION GAP

EXPECTATION GAP

Auditors responsibility in relation to:

  1. Larger range of parties
The Caparo case limits the parties who may successfully sue the auditor for negligence. It appears that only persons who have a contractual relationship with the auditor can make a claim. (ie the shareholders & directors of the company).
In some respects this seems reasonable, as it seem unfair that a 3rd party should be able to successfully sue an auditor for damages when he has paid nothing towards the cost of the audit. However, the credibility of the report should not be reduced hence the audited f/s.

A set of a/c should have the same meaning to the co, the shareholders and the 3rd parties. It unreasonable for auditors to argue that an error in the f/s could be material to 3rd parties & not material to shareholders or the co’s management. If 3rd parties believe that audited a/c are not accurate , this can affect decisions by potential investors & banks who lend money to co’s. the long term effect is a fall in share price, because investors will be less willing to purchase shares of the co and as well as raising of new finance. Banks & individuals will also be unwilling to lend money to the co. It is therefore unreasonable that auditors should be liable for negligence to a wide range of parties.

  1. Detecting & reporting all errors & fraud
ISA 240 – The auditor’s responsibility in relation to fraud & error states: the auditor should design audit procedures to obtain reasonable assurance that misstatements arising from fraud & error that are material to the f/s taken as a whole are detected.
So, the auditor is not responsible for detecting immaterial fraud & error. When fraud & errors are deliberately hidden by the co’s management, it would be unreasonable to expect the auditor to detect it using normal audit procedures.
If the auditor was to detect all fraud & errors, it would considerably increase the cost of the audit and the final result might not be cost effective.

  1. Investment company & pension funds holding client’s money
Institutions who hold client’s money & invest it for them are covered by specific legislation. If there are breaches in these legislations, the auditor can report this to the regulatory body without being liable to the client for breach of confidentiality.
It is unreasonable to ask the auditor to ensure that no loss arise on investment held by a financial institution. However, there is a need for the auditor to ensure that funds are invested in accordance with the wishes of the client, that unauthorized investments are not made and that there is no fraudulent misappropriation of funds with a view to commit fraud.

BALANCED SCORECARD

BALANCED SCORECARD

A discussion of the advantages of the balanced scorecard(BSC) as a basis for performance measurement (PM) over traditional mgt a/c views of PM.

In the early 1990 studies in several co’s carried out by Robert Kaplan & David Norton. The studies aimed at investigating the need to balance short term performance with drivers of long term growth opportunity. The advantages over the traditional focus of financial performance are:

  1. Traditional measures tend to be dominated by financial a/c requirements
Eg. Stock valuation, including WIP, ROI
The BSC is more broadly based. It argues that no single measure can provide a clear performance target or focus attention on critical areas of the business.

  1. Traditional measures are mainly inward looking whereas BSC is more outward looking & focus on comparisons with competitors in order to establish best practice & to ensure change is implemented to achieve it. It requires a balanced presentation of both financial & non-financial PM and goals.

  1. BSC focuses to a great extend on strategic planning for the long term. It attempts to identify the needs & concerns of customers & identification of new products and markets.

  1. BSC attempts to overcome the emphasis on the quantifiable aspects of internal operations in financial terms. It also considers a range of non-financial and qualitative measures.

The BSC views the business from 4 different perspectives.(Internal business, Innovation & Learning, Customers, Financial perspective). It provides measures that should assist in movements towards these goals. Its focus is both internal & external.

Example of measures that can be used:

  1. Internal Business
Cycle time, unit cost analysis, engineering efficiency

  1. Innovation & Learning
# of new products introduced, time to market new products

  1. Customer perspective
% Sales from new product, % on time deliveries, % orders from enquiries

  1. Financial Perspective
Profit, Sales growth, ROI, cash flow analysis

GuyanaYours to discover - Review by A. Dukhia

Guyana….Yours to discover.
A review by Andre Dukhia
Product Development Officer, Guyana Yours to Discover.
Guyana…Yours to discover. The 2007 edition of this highly sought documentary will be presented to the media on the 13th of April 2007 at Camp Ayangana.  This 60 minutes documentary film by the promising local producer Major Mike Charles has been a much reviewed piece of work here in Guyana and overseas, gaining much popularity and positive criticism over the past 8 months. The film covers remote, undiscovered expanses of pristine forest, and local cultures positioned in some of the most difficult to reach areas of Guyana.
The film raises as many questions as it provides answers. What is the central thematic? Is it the pristine beautiful and mysterious mountains and rainforest covers or is it the Wai-Wai’s primitive, unique and courageous way of life? Alternatively is the central thematic that abstract quest, the compulsive curiosity and exercise of Will  that over the years has inspired Mike Charles to capture daring footage, as is apparent in the film’s screening? In Guyana…Yours to Discover, where focus, perspective, lens and lines of sight feature so prominently, the viewers are allowed their own perspective as to the central thematic.
The film is a sustained contest between Nature and the genius of Man. The Kaieteur Falls lures, taunts, excites, yet possesses that terrible power to obliterate any object that finds itself in its downdraft, but this did not deter Mike Charles. Infusing and surrounding that awesome, destructive power is an almost mystical beauty, a beauty that stretches far over the seemingly endless canopy of the rainforest. The turbulence and escapade of flying in the Pakaraimas, Ayangana, and Mount Roraima, the beauty is sometimes concealed or protected in mist and fog, sometimes punctuated by violent storms.
Confronting this challenge is the equally formidable genius of Man - that restless, compulsive spirit that drives initiative and pre-historic cunning, skills and creativity, the skill and ingenuity of the Wai-Wai’s to gather food. Leading the charge is a line-scarred, Guyanese military Pilot determined to capture and design the perfect documentary for the special circumstances of enlightening his fellow country men and potential visitors to this wonderful land. The film keeps viewers very close to the dreams, moods, passions, fears and reminiscences of this gentleman.
Guyana…..Yours to Discover is certain to create waves in the film and travelling worlds as the film itself goes on a journey to over six countries. This film about Guyana, apart from stimulating interest in many countries and especially with Guyanese is almost certain to inspire travels to some of the hidden jewels of this fabled city of El Dorado.
